When He Was There, Where were You

He was one of the walking wounded in our town
an old fool, a drunkard, and a clown
in the last year he lived, he was nothing but bad news
no one understood, he'd run out of things to loose

We knew he'd fought the war in Vietnam
thats all he talked about, no one gave a damn
everyone smiled when he sang his blues

but i wonder, when he was there, where were You

i guess everyone only saw who he was now
a broken old soldier, his head bowed
was he trying to live, and re-live, something thats past?
caught up in yesterdays, with his time running out fast?

He won the Silver Star in Vietnam
then he threw it away, did not give a damn
he'd lost so much, only charlie knew
But i wonder, when he was there.....

where were you?

the chruch took up a collection the day he died
sang a song, bout Jesus, no one cared
no one thought of the price.......

that this old man had to pay
no one understanding,

that he's with Jesus today
